It’s that time of year again when the sun goes down a little earlier, the air gets a little cooler, and the trees and flowers start to go to sleep for the winter months.
Growing up on the east coast, fall is a big event!

The tree leaves falling covering the ground with beautiful autumn colors, the sun flowers are bright and smiling, pumpkins getting ready to take their places as jack-o lanterns, hay bales, corn stalks, bon fires, roasting marshmallows on a tree branch and jumping into big piles of leaves that we just rake up!
All getting ready for that one day when we all dress up and go trick or treating! Dressing as a hobo or a ghost and carrying pillowcases as our treat bags! I remember burning the end of a cork, letting it cool and rubbing the black soot on our face to create the hobo look. Wearing dad’s old clothing and stuffing a pillow under our shirts and tying a rope around our pants to keep them up and the pillow inside!  Let’s not forget about carving our Pumpkins and roasting the seeds!  Who could give their pumpkin the scariest face!
I remember our treats being homemade caramel apples and popcorn balls, cookies; we would even get big candy bars and pennies!  My brother and I would rush home and dump our pillow cases in the middle of the living room with mom and go through with excitement all of the treats we had collected the evening and talk about all of the different costumes we saw!  We were so hyped up on the event that it was difficult for us to go to sleep!  We would laugh and giggle all night!
When we are growing up, we hear our elders say…. “I remember when I was a kid and we didn’t…”
Now I understand how that phase comes about! As we grow and see the world change, we reflect on our memories, be them good or bad, we compare them to today and see that our time wasn’t so bad after all!
