There have been many exciting advances in technology recently that are geared to help seniors stay safe and comfortable in their own homes as they deal with disabilities or changes due to the aging process.  One area that has shown promise is home monitor systems.  These systems have come a long way from the push button “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” pendants.

One company has developed a product that uses the latest technology to help keep seniors safe without any action on their part, like remembering to wear a push button.  This system is based on small sensors in the home, which send data via a wireless internet access point.  The data is accessed through a website or a mobile app on a smart phone, allowing the family or caregiver to see if their loved one is moving about the house.  They can set customizable alerts that let them know if the activity is changed and receive a text message on their phone to warn that something may be wrong.   Sensors on doors let you know if exterior doors have been left open, a temperature sensor in the kitchen alerts if the stove has been left on.  There is even a pillbox that helps remind them to take their medications.  Because the system does not use cameras, privacy is protected while assuring family members that their loved one is okay.
The availability of systems like these is good news, as more people are living longer and what to stay home.  These affordable systems can help fill in for times when direct care is not wanted, or to help cut down on the hourly expense of homecare.  It’s encouraging that advances in monitoring technology can help seniors remain independent and at home.
