There is a relatively new modality being used to treat and help solve many of the most stubborn cases of personality issues, disorders, deficiencies and defects. It is called “Motivational Interviewing”. I was introduced to this by my uncle, a respected psychologist in Michigan. I was very pleased to realize that this “new” method was something I had been intuitively doing as a counselor for many years already.
As a counselor, I’ve always felt that my role with the individuals and families I work with is one of guiding and mentoring. Yes… I am here to strategize and assist in the literal “solving” of problems as well, but ultimately, I always try to empower my clients to be capable of the changes they always felt were impossible. It is one thing to provide an answer to an issue, and sometimes this is absolutely needed and necessary, however, it is often better to lead them to their own strengths and insights so they can not only solve their current issues, but train how to solve future issues that are yet to even be known. You know… feed someone a fish and they will eat today, but… teach someone to fish and they will feed themselves life-long!
If they’re starving, i.e. in crisis, then we need to give the fish and eat; solve the problem now. But if it isn’t an urgent crisis (and what isn’t?!) then it’s best to do both: Empower you to grow and expand your skills but also provide answers to solve issues now! This “motivational interviewing” method is about leading people to the right conclusions and destination and so much more than instructing them. Through well-trained, skilled and experienced counseling we can be “enlightened” to see and, even more importantly, take action on our problem; whether it’s our impossible kid, impossible spouse, our work or… impossible, stubborn, resilient us!
If we are properly, and I do mean properly… motivated… we will find the strength to do and to see what must be done and be able to do it. There is a science to motivation and it is something you can learn and master. You can become “motivated” for anything.
