Since the mid-1990’s the SCV Mayor’s Committee for Employment of Individuals with Disabilities, a local non-profit group, has focused on one goal – to give people with disabilities a fair opportunity to seek and gain productive employment here in Santa Clarita.

They have used several vehicles over the years toward this end including providing the community with guest speakers who have relevant information to share, recognizing local employers who have “stepped up to the plate” in their own businesses, participating at the annual Transition Fair for young adults with disabilities, and sponsoring a scholarship fund to monetarily assist persons with disabilities move toward gainful employment.
The speakers and topics over the years have been varied and have included business panels, celebrities, government officials, and those who have walked the road less traveled themselves – sharing their personal stories.
The organization’s board members are volunteers, and all share the common focus of helping to level the playing field just a bit more in this area of concern.
Sometimes it only takes a small change in attitude or behavior to start making a difference.  Sometimes just a wiliness to listen can result in wonderful opportunities for others and for ourselves.
The next general community event is scheduled for this coming May.  Anyone interested in attending or receiving more information can contact the Committee at scvmcemploy@gmail.com, or by calling 661-259-0033 X500.
