Ma Maison is ushering in the spring season with a bang this year because now we have an outside garden with live plants and garden accessories. This spectacular addition to our store has afforded us a new palette to bring you interesting yard art, birdfeeders, topiaries, garden stakes and much more. We are adhering to the needs of our environment and offering low maintenance and drought tolerant solutions for your yard too. We have beautiful arranged succulent plantings ready to go and below are a few tips to keep your cacti plants flourishing.
Basically, the term “succulent” is completely non-scientific and can refer to any plant with fleshy parts (leaves, stems, or roots), usually which are adapted for storing moisture in times of drought. These plants come from all over the world and live in all different habitats so there are variances in care, but the following tips will help.
• Watering and Fertilizing: Succulents are tough, and can usually survive with little or no water, but they do need moisture to thrive. During their growing season, from spring into fall, these plants like weekly water and fertilizer. During each watering, give the soil a good soaking, so that water runs out of the ‘drainage holes’ of the pots and add fertilizer at the same time. When the weather cools and day-length shortens, plants enter a rest period and the time between watering can increase by letting the potting mixture dry out between watering.
• Light: Most cacti and succulents like bright light, but not all can tolerate intense, direct sunlight, especially in conjunction with high temperatures. If your plant is getting too much light it will appear “off color,” taking on a “bleached out” look, or looking burnt. If your plant is getting too little light it will appear to be reaching for the light and simple placement adjustments can be made to make your plant happy again.
• Potting and Soil: Succulents can survive in any type of material the pot is made of, but it must allow good drainage. The most successful potting mix for cacti and succulents should possess sand and grit so that the soil drains very well.
