Kids like to talk. We all take talking for granted. Talking is, for most of us, our primary means of communication. I would imagine babies are thrilled to be able to tell their mothers that they are hungry instead of letting their cries do the work. There are many ways we communicate with the world. One way we communicate is through the objects that we create. These objects are infused with our inner thoughts that sometimes emerge in the form of that thing we call “art.”
Children are especially good a expressing their inner feelings through art. The expression of their feelings through art is a wonderful form of communication. The art of our children always speaks to us.
When children create art, they tell us how they see the world. Animals and parents may be oversized. Colors for some things may not fit into reality – purple dogs anyone? However, through a child’s art we see their relationship with the rest of the world. This is communication between the child-artist and us. Since a reason for communication is to share our hopes, desires and fears, a child’s art is a wonderful way of both understanding their feelings and sharing what they care about most with their parents, siblings, and relatives.
While The ARTree’s mission is to bring arts education to children in Santa Clarita, we do not forget that a benefit of art is to communicate the feelings of the artist to the rest of the world. For children, this requires an environment where expression, freedom and communication are prized. We welcome the opportunity to share our approach to arts education with you and your children at any of our classes at the Newhall and Canyon Country Community Centers, and at the Santa Clarita Activities Center.
