Today one of the main goals of high school is preparing students for college. High school classes and activities play a role in shaping students as both a person and a college applicant. Regardless of the type of post-high school academic institution chosen, basic requirements must be fulfilled in order to progress to a given level of education. If students want to gain admission to highly selective colleges or have a shot at winning scholarships they will need to accomplish even more.
High school is the time to take inventory of aspirations, experiences, strengths, and weaknesses. Start exploring the types of things that students find interesting. Research potential careers and find college programs that map to those careers. Set goals for grades, standardized tests and involvement, and work on ways to achieve those goals. Start or join clubs and pursue leadership roles in those organizations as a way to demonstrate leadership potential to colleges and organizations offering scholarships. Engage in job shadowing, internships and volunteering in the local community to demonstrate interest in a field of study.
