The Santa Clarita Valley is home to five high-performing school districts serving a population of 48,000 students in K-12.
The Newhall, Saugus and Sulphur Springs School Districts serve K-6, while the Castaic School District serves K-8 and the William S. Hart Union High School District serves students in grades 7-12, coming from the four elementary school districts.
Parents in the SCV can rest assured that each of the local districts is committed to not only providing a top-notch education, but students will be in a safe, nurturing and supportive environment while on campus.
Schools in all five school districts have been honored as Blue Ribbon Schools, as well as California Distinguished Schools, for exceptional academics, teaching, administration, the school environment, support services and parent groups as part of a stringent review process.
With high-performing elementary school districts preparing future students for the rigors of junior high school, the Hart District partners well with them to ensure students transition smoothly into the new and exciting environment of junior high schools.
All districts are dedicated to helping students become global citizens who think critically, solve problems, persevere, embrace diversity in people and viewpoints, and have a passion for learning and the arts.
Parent groups such as PTA and other organizations are strong on school campuses and community members are also encouraged to support their local school parent group, to help enrich programs at the school sites.
In the Hart School District, students receive a top-notch education along with the opportunity to learn about various career options through career pathways, college planning counseling, internships, shadowing and Regional Occupation Program (ROP) classes while pursuing their interests in performing arts, sports, electives and a variety of campus clubs.
Teachers in all five local school districts are fully credentialed and “No Child Left Behind” compliant. They are enthusiastic and go above and beyond the call of duty each and every day to make sure all students are comfortable and enjoying a good experience that focuses on academics and the social and emotional aspects of all children of individuals.
Changes are underway in the area of curriculum with Common Core State Standards starting implementation for this upcoming school year. This past school year, pilots were taking place across all five school districts, along with professional development for teachers to gear up for this change that promises to grow independent thinkers and innovators, who explore and analyze real-life problems, content and situations for causes, patters and outcomes to apply this knowledge in their everyday lives to become productive citizens. The new standards will focus on producing career and college-ready students in the 21st century.
Students are parents will find more rigor in the process and higher expectations during testing to better prepare students for their futures.
The federal government is not involved with this adoption, which will be state-controlled, as in the past, and administered through the California Office of Education.
