On May 28, 2014, the world lost an inspiring voice known for her commitment to civil rights and respected and celebrated as a poet and author. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Presidential Medal of Arts, and three Grammy Awards. Her degrees and accolades are countless. What inspired the world are her words of truth and overcoming injustice. She had the “unshakable faith and values of traditional African-American family, community, and culture.”
The Sheriff’s Youth Foundation in partnership with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department encouraged the youth of Los Angeles County to learn more about the life and words of Maya Angelou through its Youth Essay Contest. Young people ages 7-17 who reside in the County of Los Angeles were encouraged to submit an essay to remember and celebrate her work.
Three (3) Apple iPad Mini 16GB WiFi tablets will be awarded in each of the following categories: Youth Activities League participant, Vital Intervention Directional Alternatives (VIDA) participant, and a member from the general Los Angeles County community.
