Emmy recipient and local ARTree Community Arts Founder and President, Bob Hernandez joined the talented staff at SCCS as the new art teacher in August 2014.
“I am excited to be the new art teacher at SCCS,” said Hernandez. “Everything I’ve done in my career has led me to this point in my life. The Lord has prepared me for this position.”
Hernandez graduated from California Institute of the Arts, BFA with honors. Hernandez was a Design Director for KCBS, Fox Sports Network, Telemundo and has served on the Executive Board of The Broadcast Designers Association and as Associate professor at Cal State Northridge, teaching design and experimental film.
“Everything we see around us is an expression of God’s creativity,” said Hernandez. “People think they are not artists, but they are – they are artists in different ways. It is my skill and passion to draw that out.”
Hernandez and SCCS Administration believe that creative expression and arts education is tremendously important to students today. “Creative expression is one of four SCCS core values,” said Mr. Kirk Huckabone, SCCS Administrator.
“Kids don’t talk enough to each other and don’t communicate as well together,” said Hernandez. “I want to teach them the language of creativity – to think outside the box and be a critical thinker. There isn’t only one way to accomplish a task.”
Hernandez’s plans for the art program this new school year include a foundational base of introduction to creativity, to units on perspective drawing, charcoal, watercolors, acrylics and found objects sculpting. The second semester will include more advanced, three dimensional projects with blocks of wood, wire, etc.
“Many of my projects involve social interaction,” said Hernandez. “Students work as teams and will include real-world positions like Creative Director, Art Director and Project Lead.”
Hernandez’s passion about art and the process is evident. “It’s not about the end result. It’s about the journey,” said Hernandez. “I believe in the journey – and what the students learn in the process.”
SCCS Administration is excited to have such a high-caliber addition to the staff.
