In our increasingly competitive and ever-evolving society, strong foundations and effective preparation are the keys to success. This is true in business, finance, government, and most especially in education. As technological advances move us forward at a rapidly increasing pace, our schools are tasked with preparing students today for jobs that don’t even exist yet! How can that be done?
As surprising as it may sound, it starts with great preschools. Why? Foundation and preparation.
Students entering Kindergarten coming from an academically oriented preschool, demonstrate a distinct advantage over students who have not had such early preparation. Preschool students are being prepared for the classroom environment, are mastering basic skills, and are working collaboratively with other students. The socialization and organizational skills developed through nurturing preschools prepare kids for success in elementary school and beyond. Preschool prepared Kindergarteners enter elementary school better prepared academically, socially, emotionally, and in the case of faith-based preschools, spiritually.
It is important for parents of young children to view preschool as an early preparation stage, not simply as daycare. The early formative years are critical times for the development of social skills, character, morals, and basic learning skills. Therefore, parents should “interview” potential preschools. Look for key indicators that the school is organized, academically oriented, cheerful, nurturing, and committed to building up their child’s sense of self, developing their core character, and preparing them for future classroom success. With fun, vibrant, and engaging staff dedicated to nurturing the next generation, preschool children develop an enthusiastic desire to learn. Parents who tour various preschool campuses looking for those key indicators will find the right “fit” for their child.
As the Managing Director of The Institute for the Redesign of Learning, a non-profit organization specializing in educational services for preschool age through adults, I see the value of nurturing an individual’s ability to learn, across all age groups. It is consistent year after year, those students who come to elementary school from academically based preschools, such as Bethlehem Lutheran Preschool, start their formal education with an advantage that carries through, even to high school. The foundation and preparation provided at strong preschools instills not only the skills, but a love of learning that drives students to succeed. Such students are life-long learners, and possess the adaptability to create and fill those jobs of the future.
