It was a wonderful summer… long, but wonderful. I think we can safely say that, from an RV perspective, “It’s been a great year.”
It’s time to start thinking about slowing down and getting the RV ready for winter. Some of us will be putting our RVs into storage; others will be doing business as usual.
For both groups, there are things to consider. All RV insurance companies require you to take steps to ensure your RV is kept in good operating condition. For instance, you need to check the condition of your tires, and make sure your roof is in good water-tight condition. If you document an annual inspection of the roof, tires, interior plumbing and safety equipment of your RV, then– if you a have serious problem with your RV– you can show the insurance company you have done your part.
Another thing to remember: if, during the course of your travels, you’ve had minor accidents, bumps or scrapes, it’s important to have those things repaired before the rainy season. There are a number of reasons why this is important. If, for example, you have some small fiberglass damage, not having it repaired will allow moisture to infiltrate the glass mat. That can cause mildew and fungus to grow, expanding the glass mat and requiring a larger repair later on. In fact, whether the damage is to the fiberglass, aluminum or roofing, the greatest risk to your RV is the development of mildew and mold within the walls.
Most of your reputable RV collision centers will be happy to inspect your RV on an annual basis for no charge, and supply you with proof of inspection.
Stock, horse and utility trailers should also receive annual inspections. These vehicles usually receive some of the most severe usage of all RVs. Tires, flooring, running lights and brakes should be routinely checked. The flooring in horse and stock trailers is subject to high moisture and may need to be replaced, depending on usage. The exterior of these trailers is often overlooked and in need of fresh paint. Most utility trailer life spans exceed traditional RVs by three to four times, and their value is usually based on their condition, rather than age.
It’s been a great year; let’s finish it safely!
