Stone Soup is an old folk tale in which hungry travelers come to a village carrying nothing with them but a large pot. The villagers are unwilling to share any of their food. So, the travelers take the pot to the nearby stream, fill it with water, drop a big stone in and then place the pot over a fire. The villagers become curious and start to ask what the strangers are doing.

They explain that they are making stone soup, which is very good but they are in need of garnish. One by one the villagers add some food to the soup. Once the soup is completed, everyone enjoys the results of cooperation and helping each other.
At the 8th Annual Santa Clarita’s Literacy & Arts Festival we will be retelling the story of Stone Soup. Children will have a chance to create a stone soup (with paper mache ingredients) as they listen to the story. We are asking that our guests bring actual food, something that could be added to a soup to give to the Santa Clarita Food Pantry. For each item that is brought in, the giver will receive a raffle ticket for an opportunity to win a 30-inch lollipop drum provided by Remo.
Presented by the SCV Education Foundation and the City of Santa Clarita, the festival is a family event to explore, play, watch, listen, create and enjoy all types of arts and books. Being held at Old Town Newhall library we will be offering an array of activities, indoors and out.
Watch as a mural is created by toast. Make your own shadow puppets and green eggs and ham. Listen to local musicians play and sing and authors as they read their books.  From ballet to balloon storytelling, Instrumental Petting Zoo to Post-It art – there is something that will tickle everyone’s fancy.
Join us on November 15th, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Old Town Newhall Library. For more information visit www.scveducationfoundation.org.  After the festival, stay for the Main Street Block Party and the lighting of the Holiday Tree.
