There have been numerous studies done exploring the relationship between volunteering and health.  These studies consistently demonstrate that there is a significant relationship between volunteering and good health!  With men and woman living longer and enjoying better health into their later years, retirement has become an extremely active phase of life in which many seniors finally have time to devote to causes and interests that have previously taken a backseat to careers or family obligations.

According to Senior Corps, over 26 million seniors in this country have discovered the sense of purpose that comes from volunteering, and seniors who volunteer may actually add years to their lives.
There are numerous volunteer opportunities for those willing to donate their time and efforts during retirement.  The key is to find a volunteer position that you would enjoy and are capable of doing.  It’s also important that your commitment matches the organization’s needs.  So where do you find these volunteer opportunities?  Some suggestions are: community theatres, museums, libraries, senior centers, service organizations, local animal shelters, rescue organizations or wild life centers, youth organizations, national parks, places of worship such as church or synagogues.
Getting involved in assisted living or retirement communities is a great place to volunteer, for people who have a special interest in older people and appreciate their wisdom and generosity. It can be such a rewarding experience for both the resident and the volunteer!  Social assistance such as friendly visits, companionship, entertainment, are just a few ways you can share your time and talent with residents.   To learn more about volunteer opportunities at an assisted living, you can contact the activity director or volunteer coordinator.
Volunteering can bring both fun and fulfillment to your life, and it’s good for your health!
