As the holidays approach, students often become distracted from the final work and tests of the semester. Now is the time to step in to help well before testing begins.
Students must master one math concept before moving on to the next. History and science place an emphasis on memorization. And it takes time to develop good essay writing skills. Waiting until a few days before a test to review will only leave the student feeling ill-prepared.

Take time to track your child’s progress as reflected in his graded homework or posted on the online parent portal. If you are unsure of your daughter’s grades or her difficulties going into the finals, contact her teacher. Beyond that, a professional tutor can assess a student’s deficiencies and begin to remedy them in the first lesson.
Some teachers provide study guides, while others offer verbal recommendations. Make sure that your child knows what to expect on each test and that she sets aside time every day to review for each class. Repeated review is critical to recall.
For your part, you can talk to your son about what he’s learning in any given class. Ask questions about those topics to help him expand and deepen his understanding. As you help him connect his lessons to his existing knowledge, you help him build a more solid foundation for future lessons.
To reduce your son’s potential for test anxiety, encourage and assist with one final review. Help him visualize a successful outcome. He can avoid negative projections by acknowledging what he has learned. Then allow him to do something fun and relaxing the night before and ensure that he gets a good night’s sleep.
Finally, provide him with a healthy breakfast. This should include protein and complex carbohydrates, which support brain function and sustain energy.
We hope you’ll have opportunities during the school break to enjoy fun outings with your children. These can engage their curiosity and begin interesting conversations.
We wish you safe, peaceful, and joyous holidays!
