Undoubtedly, raising children is a lifelong venture and one that is well worth the investment and time.  Within this endeavor the time spent in school from kindergarten through high school are the most foundational and too often stressful of all. How as parents can we make good decisions and help our children make good choices during these important years?  Too often we fail to consider the importance of these choices from the very beginning of a child’s education.

In the primary years children are incredible learners. It has often been said that the kindergarten through third grade student will take in more new and foundational information in these years than they will in all the rest of their pre-college years put together.  And, it is not just academic information that they will be assimilating. This is also a time when core values, beliefs, and confidence are developed.  Many outcomes of a poor start in school are not seen until later years. By that time patterns have been established and social circles have been created that are hard to break.  For these reasons it is important that families consider early on the ideals they want instilled into their child’s life.
To truly prepare our children for life we need to provide academic excellence, promote physical fitness and healthy life styles and encourage their creative and artistic abilities. However, without combining these qualities with firm moral and spiritual convictions, we leave them inadequately prepared for taking all those abilities and using them as productive citizens.
