Here at West Coast Music Academy we love the holidays. Why is that? Because this time of year, more than any other, kids and adults are receiving their first musical instruments and getting ready to start down the path to learning music, which we get to take part in! For many people (especially parents), this can be a bit daunting because of everything involved. So, to give everyone a little bit of help and guidance we have provided a short guide for some of the most popular instruments we offer at the Academy.
Piano/Keyboard – First of all, pianos and keyboards are essentially the same thing – yes, keyboards are electronic, but the technique to play them is exactly the same as piano. If you learn on piano, you can easily transfer to a keyboard. If your child decides they want to play piano, you don’t need to run out and buy a $10,000 instrument that takes up half your living room. A simple, full size keyboard with weighted action (this simulates the feel of a piano) is an excellent, cheaper alternative and many can be had for as little as $300.
Guitar – There are generally two types of guitars: acoustic and electric. Like the piano, the technique to play each guitar is essentially the same, but the feel of each instrument is a bit different. For younger kids we usually recommend getting an acoustic, nylon string guitar as it’s easier on smaller fingers. For kids that are a bit older, an electric guitar from an established company like Fender or Gibson is an excellent investment that should last them for years. Just remember that with an electric guitar you will need to buy an amplifier to plug it into as well.
Drums – Drum students can start with a simple pad and drum sticks which can be purchased from us. There’s no need to run out and buy a drum set right away as the first few months will be spent learning rudiments and technique. Later on a simple 5 piece drum set with cymbals is sufficient for most beginning students.
Violin – Violin is a bit trickier than other instruments because there are so many different sizes available. You will want to get a size that is proportionate to your child’s height and most violin shops will help you determine this. Most of our clients tend to rent violins when their kids start with us since they will need to swap sizes eventually. If you do rent, make sure it includes a package with a bow, case and other accessories such as rosin and a chin rest.
