Almost 29 years ago, my husband and I decided to offer fine art drawing and painting classes to children and teens. Our own children were being asked to draw things for school reports without having the slightest idea of how to go about creating drawings of Indian villages, or a whale, or other topics they were writing about, and their frustration was palpable.
It became obvious that the missing link to their success in this area was actual artistic training. In realizing this, we also had the cognition that most people either expected children to have an innate ability or talent, or, for the others, they would just have to struggle along and eventually come to the conclusion that they had no artistic ability. Most adults have come to that same conclusion somewhere in their education – just ask them.
This was unacceptable to us, thus KidsArt was born. From one classroom on the campus of the private school where we taught, KidsArt has grown and flourished as an absolute necessity for thousands of families who understand the value of art training. Increased focus, fine motor skills, concentration, self-esteem, pride in one’s abilities, and a lifetime of artistic appreciation are only a few reasons why art should be part of the “whole” child’s development.
Brain development is not just about the side of the brain that is logical and is stimulated by math, reading and science. There are parts of the brain that develop and are enhanced from creativity; from appreciation of beauty – art is a catalyst for that development. Culturally we need our youth to be connected to art, as it is a supreme endeavor that has lasted for centuries and even millennium. We house great works of art in museums, not because it gives people jobs, but because art is valuable, it is a treasure of our world. Thousands upon thousands of people visit museums around the world every day. Why? Because art is important, and because it is important, it needs to be an integral part of our children’s education.
KidsArt is proud to be helping for that to happen in our society.
