Most seniors probably don’t think of this, but some of the delights of Valentine’s Day, such as romance, wine, fruit and chocolate can be down right good for the heart, according to research from the University of Michigan.
Of course, moderation is always key when enjoying food and wine.
There are also different activities associated with Valentine’s Day that can be heart-healthy, such as a massage. Massage therapy can be useful in helping seniors relax, reduce stress and anxiety, and has been long linked with benefiting the heart.
In addition to being heart-healthy, Valentine’s Day activities can also help keep loneliness at bay. Valentine’s Day can be a lonely holiday for the elderly, many of whom have lost a spouse. Activities that aim to involve the elderly might also add some fun to their day!
Some suggestions might be gathering card-making supplies and assisting the elderly in their creative efforts. Involving the grand-kids in activities such as making cards for each other, baking special treats and listening to music can add to a day of Valentine fun!
And remember, all of these suggestions don’t have to be limited to just Valentine’s Day itself. Practicing them every day can only lead to a much better heart-health status, and a happy and fulfilled life for our seniors!
