In the 21st century there seems to be endless choices of engaging activities that a parent can choose for their child. Art is one of the important ones. Art is everywhere, and education in art is as vital as the “three R’s.” It encompasses history, reading, looking, and most importantly it teaches you how to “see”…to really see! For those children and teens that are interested in learning to draw and paint realistically, the KidsArt program in Valencia is individualized to every student, so their interests are taken into account and their art programs are developed to include specific artistic goals. Far too many children get little, or no exposure to fine art education.
This in not “cut and paste, but learning the techniques and skills necessary to competently draw and paint. Why this activity over others, you may ask? Children and teens are being asked all the time to draw things in school that they have no training to do. No one would expect a child to do a complicated algebra problem without knowing math basics, and no one would expect a child to be able to write a complicated story without having basic English skills. Then why are they asked to draw things for assignments when no one taught them how? KidsArt teaches fundamentals, basic building blocks for artistic achievement. And, the exciting thing is that many studies have been done that show that children and teens that are involved in artistic programs, score higher on their standardized tests in school!
Besides the skills learned in class, think of how wonderful to have such skills – to be able to sketch something on a family vacation that you can look back on years later and have a very real sense of how that place or thing made you feel. Art is a quiet, focused activity, requiring attention to detail, with the benefits of increased eye-hand coordination, the ability to “see” relationships (size of objects, placement of shapes), tone, shade and shadow, color, and all those things that come to light when studying how to draw and paint. It is a whole world that opens up to our children and to us as witness to their artistic creations. Art can be a part of wherever they go, and whatever they do, now and in their future.
