Have you sung a hymn in church or ‘kum-ba-ya’ at the campfire and wanted to crawl under a rock afterward? Do you feel embarrassed when you might have to sing Happy Birthday at a party?  Many give up hope to excel at singing when they hear “Dear, you are tone-deaf. Rather than singing, why don’t you try something else?” I have good news if you have the desire to sing better!  I (along with many other singing instructors) believe that unless there is a physical problem, there is no such thing as being ‘tone-deaf’.

If you’re singing and realize you’re pitch is off, then how can you be tone-deaf? Singers may actually be able to hear the tone or pitch, but have difficulty reproducing it. Singing can be equated to a synthesis of two instruments- a wind instrument and a string instrument. Singers use breath (similar to playing a wind instrument) and pass air through their vocal cords (functioning like a string instrument). One may compare singing to learning a sport. Everyone can learn the game of tennis, but some will have better coordination immediately. Those who are not as coordinated can still learn how to improve their coordination.
I also believe half the battle of learning how to sing is building confidence. It’s not just about vocal technique; it’s also about improving self-esteem. Sure, it’s good to examine your voice and look for ways to improve. But often singers can be their worst enemy! A great exercise is to sing a song and look for more positive than negative things about your voice. It’s not easy to do for even the best singers.
Comparing yourself to other singers is like comparing apples to oranges. No one wants all singers to sound alike (especially record companies)! Focus on what you do best, not on what you can’t do.  Think about why so many sing well in the shower. They’re naked, uninhibited, and have wonderful acoustics. When a singer learns to overcome inhibitions and sing in tune, he or she can relax and sing with confidence.
You may not sound like Barbara Streisand or Brian McKnight, but why not give singing a try? It can be the most joyful experience!
