I often meet young people who want to know whether I like what I do as a lawyer. The answer is that it usually depends upon the day, and sometimes, on the time of the day that you ask me. People become lawyers for different reasons. Some are drawn to the money. Others do it because they want to help people. Anyone who knows me will tell you that I care very much about my clients. When a client comes to me with a problem, I want to do everything I can legally do to help that client.
One of my long-term clients came to me with a very serious legal problem. We were facing an incredibly difficult challenge. The law was against us. And so were many of the facts. We went to mediation and the mediator actually told my client in my presence that there was basically no way my client was going to win and that my client should just negotiate for as many concessions that the other side was willing to give us. But we did not listen and we would not give up. We couldn’t. Too much was at stake.
While we have not had our hearing yet, so far the results have been extremely favorable to us. Words cannot describe how hard my client and I had both worked together. Had my client listened to the mediator, we never would have gotten to this point. Just like the Phil Collins’ song, “AGAINST ALL ODDS”, we persevered.
That song has a lot of personal meaning to me and I live by it. For weeks now and probably for many weeks to come, if someone were to ask me whether I like being a lawyer, with no hesitation I would say that there is nothing like it in the world.
