And now for something completely different… The sublimely silly Monty Python spoof Spamalot is holding court at the Canyon Theatre Guild and began on March 7.
If you need a little reminder to “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life,” this meta-theatrical blast of British balderdash will have you grinning from the first cantankerous cow to the last Bubonic plague lampoon. Winner of three Tony Awards including Best Musical, this musical lovingly rips off “The Holy Grail” and sends brave King Arthur and his moderately competent knights on a head-scratching quest to find it. It does justice to such classic Python creations as the dauntless (if limbless) Black Knight, the dread Killer Rabbit and the mysterious Migrating Coconuts. And underlying all that silliness, the play fortifies all its tomfoolery with tart historical and socioeconomic analysis, not to mention a lovingly, knowingly skewered code of chivalry as we’re introduced to the exploits of King Arthur. Spamalot is a must-see and will surely have you laughing from the opening scene through the end. Performances are Fridays: March 27, May 1 at 8 p.m.; Saturdays: March 28, April 4, 11, and 25, and May 2 at 8 p.m.; Sundays: April 12 at 6 p.m., April 26 at 2 p.m.
