Have you ever thought of new ways to promote reading for your kindergartener? Perhaps you have heard about reading centers, these help small groups of kindergarteners to practice hands on literacy activities like looking at and discussing books, playing literacy games, such as missing letter games, alphabet and sight word games.
A reading center is very important for a kindergartener’s early learning experience. Reading centers and groups are arranged for children to work individually or in groups of two to four. An adult may be present for guidance and assistance to the children as needed, or children can read and complete work on their own. Reading centers should have a variety of activities to choose from and should give the child a choice of what to work on. This is recommended because each child learns at his or her own pace, and their preferences and their own abilities should be strongly considered. Kindergarten children will be motivated and will have a strong desire to learn when they are able to pick and choose their direction for learning. Reading centers give the child an opportunity to take risks by trying new things and being able to challenge themselves at their own pace. Reading centers doesn’t require a child to keep up with other children, and it doesn’t require them to complete activities and work that they are not developmentally prepared for, or study material they have already previously seen and mastered. Reading centers go far more than a teacher leading instruction, it gives children an opportunity to increase and practice their knowledge of sounds, sight words, phonics, rhyming, matching letters and reading books at their level. This keeps learning fresh, exciting and it keeps a child interested and actively learning.
