This summer you want your child to enjoy the best of what summer has to offer and when making summer plans, remember that research tells us that you should add some academics into this schedule. Most students lose 20 percent of their skills over the summer and start out the next school year in catch up mode. Set aside time for learning to make a critical difference. Summer isn’t just a time to think about outdoor activities, sports, or camp, it is also a great time to introduce new concepts and drive fluency of basic concepts in a relaxed, fun, no risk atmosphere without the pressure of everyday schoolwork and grades.

This is a great opportunity to remind your children that reading isn’t just for schoolwork and to begin to lay the groundwork for lifelong learners who use reading to solve problems and gain insight and who can appreciate the benefit of escaping into fantasy or adventure that only a book can provide. Use everyday examples by having kids follow instructions to build something or read a recipe to cook together or try a new board game and have your child decipher the directions.  Find an age-appropriate magazine about a favorite hobby and buy your student a journal and encourage writing in it. If you create a reward chart, you will help your child to set goals and feel a sense of accomplishment.
It is hard for busy working parents to schedule time for such academic pursuits. Tutor Doctor SCV has two summer solutions: 1.
