While you’re out and about shopping, meander around on a self-guided tour as there’s much to do and much to see, and a whole lot to learn about Newhall.
Have you seen the sculpture of Willie the Drummer Boy by artist Mark Henn? Standing in the center of the Veterans Historical Plaza in Old Town Newhall is a bronze statue of William J. Johnston Jr.
On September 16, 1863, the five foot tall 11-year-old drummer boy in Company D, Third Vermont Volunteers Infantry of the Union Army, earned a Congressional Medal of Honor. He saved his drum and held his grown and serves as an inspiration to all. The Veterans Historical Plaza is located at 24275 Walnut Street.
There are quite a few beautiful artistic expressions throughout Old Town Newhall. Just along Main Street between Market and 6th is the Walk of Western Stars Mural, by Victoria Sulski and Peter Bartczak. Some of the murals on Market Street also include California Vaquero by Nicole Ponsler, the History of Santa Clarita’s Southern Hotel, by Frank Rock and the Community Center Mural by the Special Children’s Art Foundation. The colors of Main Street are vibrant with art, so stop and appreciate all that Newhall has to offer.
Old Town Newhall is also home to silent film stars like William S. Hart and the region’s Western film industry, Indian settlings and America’s quest for gold and oil. You can tour William S. Hart’s abode and see who passed through the home of the famed superstar or take a trip back in time and at Heritage Junction, home of the historic Saugus Train Station.
Let’s not forget that Old Town Newhall is home to the popular Santa Clarita Fourth of July Parade. Santa Claritans are no stranger to celebrating the birth of America as they have been doing so for over eight decades with the popular Santa Clarita Fourth of July parade. Residents have been parading through the streets of downtown Newhall for their annual Independence Day celebration since 1932, a hometown celebration complete with thousands of spectators of all ages, lining the streets, bringing the community together and celebrating American pride.
