According to the American Diabetes Association, 10.9 million Americans living with diabetes are over age 60; that means one in four seniors are living with the disease. Diabetes can be a risky condition for seniors, because age actually increases some of the complications already associated with the condition. If you are a senior living with diabetes, you can improve your health and reduce the risk of complications by:

Managing your blood glucose level. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body is not making enough insulin or fails to properly use the insulin it makes. To manage your blood glucose and help it stay at safe levels, ask your physician about your target range for blood glucose; then, check your levels daily to find out if your within the safety window.
Making the right dietary choices. Part of the recommended lifestyle for seniors living with diabetes is maintaining a healthy diet. This doesn’t require seniors to sacrifice flavor and enjoyment; just making sure you get the right nutrients by using fresh ingredients and vegetables is beneficial to effectively managing diabetes.
Controlling blood pressure and cholesterol. When seniors enjoy a healthy diet every day, their blood pressure and cholesterol can be much easier to control. According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetics should keep blood pressure levels below 140/80 and LDL cholesterol lower than 100 – but of course, seniors should consult their own physicians regarding target levels for both personal blood pressure levels and cholesterol.
Stop smoking. Many seniors began smoking in an era when it was widely accepted – but today, there is overwhelming medical evidence of the health hazards of smoking. For diabetic seniors, the risk is even greater because smoking causes blood vessel damage that can be extremely dangerous for diabetics. Smoking cessation programs for seniors can be very effective and support groups can provide an encouraging environment for seniors who want to quit.
Exercise. Exercising is important for all seniors, but especially for seniors with diabetes because it helps to lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Other benefits for seniors who exercise include improvements in balance, flexibility and muscle strength. Just walking 20 to 30 minutes three times a week has been known to significantly improve your body’s use of glucose. Remember to check with your doctor before starting any strenuous exercise program and to drink lots of fluids before, during and after exercise.
