Halloween Toxicities

by | Oct 1, 2015 | Pet Services

Halloween is a time that is very enjoyable to us but can be detrimental to our furry friends. The types of items that come out during this holiday season can attract a curious pet. Candy is the number one toxicity that becomes available to pets. Also, pranksters tend to antagonize pets that are outside during this time. Lastly, with Halloween decorations comes cords and other shiny objects that pets are new to. Here are some pointers to keep your pets happy and safe during Halloween.
Candy is not only distributed on Halloween but it becomes available within households as well.  Bowls or containers of candy should be out of reach to pets large and small. Remember that cats can get to even the hardest areas like counters and shelves. Chocolate and other substances containing xylitol can be extremely harmful to dogs as well. Along with candy comes decorations and some have electrical cords that a curious pet may bite or play with.
Lastly, pets should be kept inside on Halloween because there will be more commotion going on and some people get curious as well. Pets in the backyard are more exposed to loud noises and pranksters. If pets are outside or tend to run out of the front door, ID tags should be worn at all times. Even better than an ID tag would be a microchip in the event that ID tags are lost or pulled off.
By following these pointers, you and your pets will have a safe and fun Halloween. If you have questions or concerns about your pet’s safety please give us a call at All Creatures Veterinary Center 661-291-1121, AV Veterinary Center 661-729-1500, or Canyon Country Veterinary Center 661-424-9900.
