Phone Apps for the Savvy Senior
We all know a savvy senior who loves to play games on their iPhone and iPad. There is more to it than checking email and “liking” on Facebook. Here are some apps that include memory games for brain exercise, because keeping memory sharp is one of the biggest goals seniors have when they age. Staying healthy is also vital as you grow older and there are now numerous apps available to guide you.
Here are a few that I think are worth checking out:
• My Personal Memory Trainer (Android)
This app is like a friendly bootcamp for the mind, training you on spatial skills, memory and concentration. Some of the tasks include doing puzzles, and memorizing and recalling patterns and numbers.
• Lumosity (iPhone)
Lumosity was designed by neuroscientists and uses seven games to improve your cognitive abilities such as attention, processing speed, flexibility, and problem solving. On your “brain profile” you can track your progress and play games that actually make you smarter.
• Fit Brains Trainer (iPhone and iPad)
This app contains over 360 games and training sessions, all of which test your memory and concentration in different ways.
• MedCoach (iPhone and Android)
This app helps you keep track of your medications and vitamins and sends you a reminder it’s time to take your various pills. It also contacts your pharmacy when you need refills. You can make a simple list of your medications or look through a library of prescribed and over-the-counter meds.
• Urgent Care (Android and iPhone)
This medical app allows you to connect with registered nurses 24/7. It also comes with a Symptom Checker and a medical dictionary. It can also put you in touch with a board-certified doctor if the situation demands it, who is there to give advice, diagnosis, or prescribe common meds over the phone. In case of a medical emergency, it’s nice to have access to health professionals in hand.
• Whole Foods Market Recipes (iPhone)
Part of staying healthy is making sure you’re getting the right nutrients into your system, and avoiding the unhealthy options. This app has over 3,000 recipes to browse through searchable by course, cuisine or special diet. It helps you make a shopping list for the ingredients, or find recipes based on the food you already have at home.
• Moves (iPhone)
This app helps you keep track of how much distance you cover by foot, how many steps you’ve taken and how many calories you’ve eaten.
