Saugus High School Celebrates 40 Years
Saugus High School opened its doors on September 8, 1975 with a goal to “develop people who build better tomorrows.” And that is just what they have done.
Flash forward four decades and Saugus High has Tony-award winning alumni, numerous awards and recognitions, a revamped campus, and 40 graduating classes. Saugus has emerged as one of the most successful high schools in Southern California.
To celebrate this achievement, Saugus held a special celebration on September 8, during which they highlighted their accomplishments as a school.
The entire student body, many alumni, former staff, civic leaders, and friends participated in the event held in the gymnasium, which was fully packed with Centurions young and old.
Campus tours were also offered for visitors, so individuals could see how the campus has changed since their time.
Principal Bill Bolde opened the celebration at 11:30 a.m. with a speech, which was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by ASB President Ian Smith and the national anthem sung by Madison Marigold. The audience was then delighted by various speeches from former staff, the founding principal, and current high school senior Drake Hougo.
Both the choir and marching band performed, highlighting Saugus’ focus on the arts. The choir performed a flash mob “Happy” and “Best Day of My Life” mash-up while the band and color guard demonstrated their competition field show “A Night at the Opera,” which features music from Queen. Notable alumna Sara Niemietz was also asked to perform, and she wowed the audience with her rendition of “Feeling Good.”
In the event’s closing, Principal Bill Bolde accepted a variety of awards and recognition from elected officials and Governing Board members.
