The Importance of Reading Activities
There are a variety of activities for children to do before, during, and after reading. Word maps are useful, especially in the elementary grades, for introducing new content area vocabulary. Word maps work best when applying them as needed in actual text learning, as they allow students to “own” the strategy of defining unknown words. In the center of the map, students write the word to be defined. Following classroom discussion, students then write the definition in their own words, a synonym and antonym for the word, and then use the new vocabulary word in a well-written sentence.
Double-entry journals are useful during content area reading because they allow students to express their thoughts, questions, and feelings about specific passages they have read. In the left column, students write down quotes, short passages, or words that cause them to react. In the right column, students write down their reactions, interpretations, and responses to the text segments they have selected.
Unsent letters is a writing-to-learn activity where students write letters in response to material they are reading. This activity requires students to use their imaginations, as well as to interpret what they have read. Students usually write unsent letters with a particular recipient in mind.
Thinking Tree offers grade-specific reading and writing classes for students in the elementary and middle grades. We look forward to speaking with you about our programs!
