Welcome 2015-16 School Year
The Sulphur Springs Union School District staff is excited to continue to deliver excellent education to its 5,400 students in grades transitional kindergarten through sixth. During the past summer months, certificated and classified Staff worked together to ensure that our children and families have all the resources needed to support and enhance our students’ 2015-16 educational programs.
Our mission is student success. Our job is to continue to partner with our families, and do whatever it takes to support our students. Our staff is committed and dedicated to bringing excellence to their work on a daily basis for our students.
This coming year, the children in the District will continue to master their California State Standards by being instructed by highly qualified and exemplary teachers. All of the teachers and administrators in the District know the importance of learning, and have ensured that they are prepared to deliver the best education to the children in all areas. This coming year, there will be a focus on STEAM and technology, and children will be learning in classrooms equipped with iPads to support and enhance their educational goals.
Knowing that all students come with individual learning goals, we continue to reflect on and improve our teaching practices to bring the very best learning opportunities to each and every student. The beginning of the school year provides a fresh start for each of us; a new year of optimism, high expectations, and commitment. We have dedicated staff, talented administrators, and a special community that supports our schools. The Board of Trustees and I thank all of our families, community partners, and Staff that continue to partner with us to bring the very best to our children in the District.
Attendance is a Critical Key to Success!
September was designated Attendance Awareness Month in the Sulphur Springs School District. Students who had perfect attendance for the month of September received an award and a ribbon noting their accomplishment. Flyers were sent home to families and posters were visible on every campus that highlighted the benefits of regular attendance in school. Why all the focus on attendance? For the Sulphur Springs School District, it is about all students having every opportunity possible to grow and achieve.
Studies have shown that there is a direct correlation between the number of student absences in Kindergarten and 1st Grade and achievement in reading in 3rd Grade. Furthermore, research suggests that poor attendance leads to an increased risk of being retained. In addition, a 2013 study concluded that students who missed 20 or more days of school had lower grades and were more likely to drop out than their peers with better attendance. It is for these reasons and many others that the Sulphur Springs School District is committed to working as a partner with families to assure our students have every opportunity to attend daily and achieve their goals.
