Why Do I Have To Practice?

There’s an old joke that goes this way: How do I get to Carnegie Hall? (a famous concert hall in New York City). The answer? Practice! To do anything well, you have to do it over and over, even after you get it right. Everyone, from professionals to performers just starting out, have to practice. It’s just like sports or playing an instrument in the band – everything gets better when you’ve worked out the rough spots.

Learning an art is dedicating yourself to a special talent. Practice can make perfect but it takes time. Don’t get frustrated if your talent is not perfect right away. Even professionals make mistakes – they are just really good at not showing it.  Make it a game with yourself… it will get better!
Tip: Discipline/Fun?   This tip is for the grownups: Performing Arts can be a wonderful experience, but if it becomes too much of a chore, students might lose interest right away. Provide an encouraging atmosphere for your young performer and support their efforts in a non-judgmental way.
Tip: Join a Music, Acting, Dance or Magic Group.   What about joining a group? You can have fun in Vibe’s Kids Sing, Broadway Kidz, Preschool Sing/Act, Princess Ballet, Hip Hop, Combo Ballet/Tap, Acting, Keyboard, Guitar, Drums, Magic or playing in a Band.  These groups have great instructors that teach performing arts techniques. Because these performances tend to have regular rehearsals, you can learn to improve your singing voice, acting, dance, magic or instrument skills. The fact that these groups also perform will also help your child to refine their skills in front of an audience.
When you perform, you’ve already become part of a special group of people who are happy to add their talents to the performance of life. The “funny” exercises are something you can do with your singing/theater/acting/magic/instrument/dance friends without worrying about what other people think. You’ll find out that your performing friends can also help you become a better performer.
