November is National Diabetes Month – What You Need to Know!
November is National Diabetes Month and a lot of attention will be focused on the many wonderful resources, support and latest breakthroughs available for those who are diabetic. Preventive measures are equally important especially since it is estimated about 25 percent of Americans are at risk for type 2 diabetes and the likelihood is raised as we age. Implementing simple efforts in your lifestyle and choices can make a difference in the possibility of being affected by diabetes. And making simple changes now may help you avoid some serious health complications of diabetes such as nerve, kidney and heart damage.
Physical activity, both cardiovascular exercise and resistance training, is one of the key ways to control diabetes. Physical activity helps lower blood sugar and boosts your sensitivity to insulin. Making an effort to get moving every day will have long term benefits and improve your overall health. Challenge yourself and change your routine frequently to keep getting a benefit from physical activity. A brisk half hour walk 5 days a week can be enough to improve insulin sensitivity.
Healthy eating choices will also aid in keeping both your body and mind healthy. Choose foods that are not processed or are “convenience meals”, which are typically high in salt and fat. It’s always best to cook for yourself and use fresh ingredients, whole grains and foods with a high fiber content whenever possible. Try to aim making half your plate non-starchy vegetables, ¼ lean protein and ¼ starch.
Some diabetes prevention superfoods include: green tea, wild salmon, non-fat yogurt, egg whites, citrus fruits, dark green leafy vegetables, oatmeal, beans and nuts.
Skipping sweet drinks like juice, soda and sweetened ice tea and limiting alcohol intake is also beneficial. There are many online resources that have delicious healthy recipes so your meals are not bland and flavorless. Eating healthy does not have to be boring!
Controlling your blood sugar is key in maintaining a healthy system, mental clarity and keeping diabetes at bay. Preventative maintenance through a regular exercise program and a balanced nutritious diet is always a better route than disease maintenance. It’s never too late to start becoming more physically active and eating more healthfully to aid in diabetes prevention!
