Thanksgiving Foods that are Great for Dental Health
It takes time to create a Thanksgiving meal. Set aside some healthier options while you and your guests wait for the Turkey and all its fixens. Instead of carbohydrate heavy foods, opt for veggies and cheese. The fiber from veggies help in your overall health not to mention the crunch factor that help to naturally clean teeth. Some examples are olives, pickles, carrots, asparagus, cucumbers, celery, artichoke hearts, cherry tomatoes and broccoli. Cheese provide for a good source of calcium that is great in strengthening teeth.
Choose to eat sweet yams as they naturally are meant to be eaten without adding the sugary gooey marshmallows. If adding extra sweetness is desired perhaps adding a dash of brown sugar or real maple syrup is all that’s needed.
Having a side of fruit to satisfy the sweet tooth is another healthy option. Fruit contains nutrients and fiber, which helps to balance the sugar content it contains. Also different kinds of fruit have been proven to decrease acid production in the mouth and promote saliva secretion which washes away food particles. Opt to make cranberry sauce and fruit pies yourself so you can control the amount of sugar as well as other things that go in there.
The thanksgiving break is also a good time to visit your dentist and make sure your teeth are healthy for the holidays.
From all of us at Dr. Mays, have a happy Thanksgiving!
“Sing songs of merriment, sing songs of joy, sing in high spirits and good faith too…
but don’t you forget to sing a song of thankfulness,
for Thanksgiving is all about being grateful for one’s blessings,
so one can be blessed once more, anew!”
