Caring For Your Teeth During The Holidays
As the holidays are upon us we direct our focus on gifts, cooking, decorating and vacations. We seldom look at the holidays as a time to maintain good health. We more use it as an excuse to pig out during Thanksgiving dinner, or sneak those holiday cookies. Holiday food and drinks are not just an assault on our waste line; they also attack our teeth. Everyone knows sugars are commonly associated with dental cavities. But, did you know other carbohydrates such as pasta or potato chips, may also damage teeth, although to a lesser degree.
Sucrose, or more commonly known as table sugar, is associated with cavities, although glucose and maltose can also cause damage to your teeth. We all know how difficult it is to stay away from all the holiday treats, especially that caramel monkey bread your mother-in-law made. This holiday season keep in mind the damage that the sticky caramel is doing to your teeth. If you don’t have a toothbrush handy, at the very least, rinse thoroughly with water after indulging. This will rinse away a lot of the sticky sugars that cling to our teeth looking to take up residency.
Maintaining good at home oral hygiene as well as visiting your Dental Hygienist every three to six months will keep your teeth looking healthy for a new year to come. Visiting your dentist is just as important as visiting your parents. Good oral health is important to our overall health; x-rays, exams and cleanings are crucial to maintain your healthy smile. If you are already doing your part to keep your smile healthy, then perhaps it’s time to whiten your smile for all those holiday photos. A simple in office whitening treatment that can be done in as little as one hour might be a great holiday gift to yourself (or someone else!). The end of the year is also a great time to utilize any remaining dental insurance benefits, so don’t let those go to waste! Here’s to another great year of health and happiness!
