Early Training in Good Sportsmanship Scores Big
It has been three years since Santa Clarita Christian School began its pee-wee sports program for Kindergarten through third grade students and it has been a huge success!
“Sports for elementary students at SCCS began in the fourth grade,” said SCCS Athletic Director Ali Aguilar. “It was my dream for the younger students to have the opportunity to play sports for their school as well.”
SCCS pee-wee sports are both for girls and boys and teams play against eight other private elementary schools from across the Santa Clarita Valley. The sports played include: basketball, soccer and flag football, and the program spans three seasons: fall, winter and spring.
“Having a pee wee program is an added benefit to the families that attend SCCS,” said SCCS parent Rob Gibson. “Our youngest son is in kindergarten and he was so excited to be able to play flag football for his school. It’s great that they already know their teammates from class, so that takes away the fear of not knowing anyone on the team. It’s also super convenient that practice and games are right after school, during the week, so our weekends are reserved for our time as a family.”
On the field or court, students are learning the value of team sports in a Christian environment.
“My two main goals for the boys are to glorify the Lord and have fun,” said Mr. Caldwell, SCCS pee-wee boys’ flag football coach. “Sports is an avenue and tool the Lord gives us to glorify Him and proclaim to the world His saving grace in our lives. I see all of our games as mission trips in which we have the chance to share the gospel with the other teams and families with our words and then demonstrate what a redeemed life looks like through our actions.”
With a low student-to-teacher ratio, competitive sports for grades K-12, Advanced Placement classes and full and half day Kindergarten programs, SCCS partners with families to help produce students who are prepared to make a difference in the world for God. Every year, SCCS students continue to add to the list of acceptances into the nation’s top universities.
