Great Gift Ideas for Seniors
Believe it or not, the holidays are here again and we are all faced with the challenge of finding the “perfect gift” for our parents and grandparents. As we wander the malls, we all stop and wonder what are our options besides ties, slippers and gift certificates. Be assured that there are some wonderful choices for seniors that are sure to bring a smile to their faces, as well as making their life a little easier.
Seniors who are plagued with arthritis often have difficulty with small motor coordination. Gift ideas may include a “big lamp switch turner knob” to replace small, hard-to-turn lamp switches. “Graspable key holders” allow for easy grip and holds one or two keys in place for easy use. “Door knob grippers” fit easily over standard doorknobs and convert them to an easy to open lever handle. “Button and zipper dressing hooks”, “long handled shoe horns” and “elastic shoe laces” allow for independence and ease when dressing. For the avid card player, an automatic card shuffler or a cardholder can make their game more pleasurable.
Those seniors with visual impairment would love to open a gift box containing a “big button programmable phone” that is preprogrammed with family phone numbers. “Large button remote television controllers” are excellent for both visually impaired and those with arthritis. Many of these come in simplified versions that have only the basic buttons for easy use. “Talking alarm clocks” also come with ability to state the davvvte as well as the time. “Large print playing cards”, “large print crossword and word search puzzles and books” as well as “books on tape” are all excellent gift ideas that facilitate independence as well as the importance of leisure.
Themed gift baskets are another great gift idea. “Let’s Keep In Touch” can be a basket filled with stationary, postcards, envelopes (even self-addressed), pens, stamps and pre-paid calling cards for long distance. “I Love Clean Clothes” can be filled with laundry detergent, fabric softener, gift certificates for a dry cleaner that has delivery service and rolls of quarters for the washing machine and dryer.
Whatever gift you give, it will always be the perfect choice because it comes with love and wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season!
