My Dentist Says I Have “Bruxism” or “Clench” My Teeth
My Dentist Says I Have “Bruxism” or “Clench” My Teeth
by Adrienne L. Fang, DDS
Bruxism is a dental condition defined as grinding your teeth or clenching your jaw. It is often attributed to stress, anxiety, sleep disorders, and/or abnormal bite, missing teeth or sleep apnea. Some of the symptoms range from dull or tension headaches to sore jaw or teeth. Severe bruxism can lead to painful, loose or fractured teeth.
It is believed that stress and anxiety is the main cause for patients to start the bad habit of bruxism. It typically occurs during sleep in short periods of intense grinding and clenching. Clenching and grinding can also occur unconsciously during the day. It is a way for our body to handle the all increasing stress we are experiencing every day and night.
The human jaw is very strong and can exert up to 150 lbs./sq. inch on average but during periods of intense bruxism it has been recorded to reach 1200 lbs./sq. inch. No wonder people who suffer from bruxism have sore jaw muscles, TMJ discomfort, and fractured teeth.
There are a few treatments for bruxism. The most common is a custom nightguard/mouthguard. It is made after custom molds and a precision bite are taken. There are many different types of nightguards available and your dentist will determine which type of nightguard best suits you. The other treatments for bruxism range from medications, physical therapy, counseling, and surgery.
What can You do to decrease bruxism? If your bruxism is primarily caused by stress, you can do things to de-stress. For example, one can exercise, meditate, seek counseling and massage therapy, or other methods to alleviate the tension and stress. If your bruxism is not from stress, contact a dental professional and obtain an evaluation to diagnose and treat your bruxism.
Don’t let your teeth and jaw suffer any more. If you are experiencing some of the symptoms mentioned or if someone you know has mentioned that you are grinding your teeth, Call your local dentist to seek treatment.
