SCV’s Teenage Talent – Part one of a five part series
There is so much talent in Santa Clarita, and much of it goes unnoticed. SCV teens are at a creative peak, writing their own music, and broadcasting it to the world. The music ranges from indie to metal, with everything in between. By utilizing platforms like SoundCloud and Youtube, many young musicians have gained a fan base, which could eventually lead to their big break. These music acts are on the way up, so catch them while they’re close to home.
Matthew Smolsky
This boy has performance in his blood. From show choir to theater to his own music, performing is Matthew Smolsky’s life. Growing up tap dancing and singing, he has always loved to be on stage, but his token instrument, the acoustic guitar, did not come into his life until two years ago.
The Hart High School senior plays both covers and originals at local establishments like Honu Coffee in Newhall and out of town venues like Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica. He will be playing at Honu Coffee on December 12th, playing originals as well as holiday favorites. Smolsky is also working on getting an EP released in early 2016 that will feature his original compositions.
Counting Ed Sheeran and Passenger as his main musical inspirations, Smolsky’s music is infused with folk and blues as well as teen pop. The songwriter is known to come up with songs almost daily, stemming from relationships or just plain teen angst. He begins the writing process with poetry and then finds the perfect music to go along with it, “I’m a songwriter, poetry is my game.” There are three main types in his repertoire: love songs, anthems, and story-based songs, with each being a completely different style.
