The Culture of Indian Food
As in any culture food plays an important and integral role in everyday life, especially when it is a holiday! Indian cuisine does vary from region to region but despite it’s diversity there are underlying threads that consist in most of these regions. Such as, the use of the variety of spices used in the food preparation that enhance the flavors of the dishes and create their own unique aromas.
India represents a cultural potpourri of a number of religions with their own celebrations and festivals with bright colors, brightly lit religious locations, homes that are glowing with lights, sweets and traditional dresses and tireless enthusiasm are all part of the features of all the holiday festivals in India and the major religions. As with any holiday Indian hospitality is very gracious, traditional and honored. Here, the guest is king and their intentions are to make you feel welcomed in their home.
So with Indian cuisine being one of the most popular cuisines in the world, it is varied in taste and type. Indian food is both rich in taste and in flavor. Each region of India has it’s own unique style of cooking and cuisine. Indian food can satisfy every type of palate with its six different tastes that are sweet, salty, sour, spicy, bitter and sharp/bitter. With these strong seasonings of flavor, spices and in general basic ingredients which include everything from grains, vegetables, fruits and meats all help to engage you in your discovery of this delicious and tantalizing cuisine. An Indian meal is well balanced in the combination of these six flavors. There are about 35 percent of Indians which are strict vegetarians while another 30 percent are regular meat eaters. Yes, it is true to say that Indian food is generally spicy. You can enjoy everything from rice dishes, vegetables, fruits and fish and meat.
