Young People and Art: More Than Straight Lines
For young people, learning art is not just about drawing straight lines, color combinations, and perspective. These skills can be fully developed when joined with creativity, confidence, perseverance and focus. Creativity may seem obvious, but what that means is approaching tasks from different perspectives. That makes a work unique, distinguishing it from others. While we all might get a chuckle from the painting of a “purple” cow, the reality is that for the young artists, that unnatural bovine shows a new way of looking at an old subject. Creativity is where memory is reinterpreted and enhanced to form new and exciting works.
Confidence not only will train young people to convincingly deliver their artistic message, but allows them to step out of their comfort zone, allowing for mistakes that lead to even more learning and creativity. In a nurturing and supportive environment, confidence comes not just from obvious success, but also from perceived failures.
Perseverance and focus allow young artists to not give up on their work or themselves. There is a difference between just making the “purple cow” and making the “perfect purple cow.” That is also where focus comes into play, keeping the balance between listening and doing. By practicing, working hard, keeping focus and persevering, young people learn not just how to create art, but skills that can be used for the rest of their lives.
ARTree classes have an approach to arts education that seeks to bring out the creativity in every student by having an open environment that understands what young people need to learn and grow creatively. Our volunteer staff of professional artists and teachers will help your child become creative in their approach to art and whatever they choose to pursue.
