Last, Butt Not Least
Most dog owners at some point will deal with a problem with their dogs’ anal glands. These are two glandular structures (pouches) found on either side of the anus which secrete a very pungent material. These glands are scent glands and the material secreted allows dogs to identify each other or leave scent markings. Similar glands are much more developed in other species such as skunks. Cats have smaller ones and usually don’t have as many of the problems associated with dogs.
Dogs that are groomed regularly will have their glands cleaned out (expressed) by the groomer and these owners are aware these glands exist. Occasionally, a dog owner isn’t aware of their existence until an impacted or infected gland occurs and the pet is brought to the clinic. In these cases, the dog might just need them cleaned out; but if infection is present, or an abscess develops, a minor surgical procedure might be required and antibiotics prescribed. Whoever cleans out the anal glands should do it carefully so as not hurt the pet – differences exist among dogs as to how to express their glands.
Any lump or bump in and around the anus, especially in the anal gland area should be thoroughly evaluated by your veterinarian because anal gland tumors have a high incidence of being malignant. In these cases, surgery is done to remove the mass and it should be biopsied. Further evaluation and treatment can be done with an oncologist.
