SCCS: A Higher Standard
Vanessa Cardenas was grateful to start her junior year at SCCS in August 2015 after being homeschooled for eight years and attending Hart for her freshman and sophomore years.
Vanessa quickly got involved at SCCS, signing up for the California Scholarship Federation, AP classes and trying out for the girl’s varsity volleyball team.
“My freshman season at Hart I played volleyball,” said Vanessa. “I wanted more playing time, however there are a lot more people and it is super competitive.”
This year SCCS’ girl’s volleyball team went to the state semi-finals with their deepest play-off run.
“Volleyball coach, Darcy Brown made a huge impact on me this year,” said Vanessa. “She is such an awesome coach and explains volleyball really well. She took a group of girls who have never played together before and made us into a great team. She would always tell us, ‘No matter what happens, win or lose, we want to be a great example of a Christian school.’”
Vanessa has also seen a big difference in the teachers at SCCS. “The teachers seem to really care about us as individuals and are able to invest their time into each of us,” said Vanessa. “My favorite teacher is Mrs. Wyllie. She really tries to have a good relationship with each of her students. We can talk to her about anything.”
Vanessa has also enjoyed being open about her faith at school. “At SCCS we are able to talk about God in a way that you wouldn’t be able to in public school,” said Vanessa.” You can talk to any teacher about God. Students are definitely held to a higher standard here; whether it be how you speak to others, to respect of teachers and how we show up when we play sports.”
With a low student-to-teacher ratio, competitive sports for grades K-12, Advanced Placement classes and full and half day Kindergarten programs, SCCS partners with families to help produce students who are prepared to make a difference in the world for God. Every year, SCCS students continue to add to the list of acceptances into the nation’s top universities.
Mark your calendars! New Family Information Night on January 26 at 6 p.m.; Shadow Day (6th-12th grade) on February 10 from 7:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.; Kindergarten Preview Day on February 19 at 8 a.m.
