Sulphur Springs Union School District
Happy 2016 from the Sulphur Springs Union School District! Students are back from Winter Break and ready to learn. TK-6th graders are learning their Common Core Standards, now known as California State Standards, and utilizing technology as an instructional tool. It is amazing to see all elementary-aged students collaborating together and explaining their work using iPads and Smart boards. At the same time, teachers are providing opportunities for students to work to their fullest potential in reading and writing, math, science, social studies, the performing arts and physical education.
To help prepare students for college and career the district offers a variety of enriching and engaging activities during the school day and after school. Several of the nine schools offer an in school coding program for all students. Currently after school the district also offers five fifth grade coding classes, four sixth grade robotics classes, and five primary coding classes. All students are learning to keyboard while visiting state-of-the-art computer labs weekly. Teachers are transitioning to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) by providing hands on STEAM activities in fully equipped science labs.
The Sulphur Springs District would not be what it is without our wonderful parents. With PTA support students experience additional experiences like art, drama, music and theatre through Cultivating Creative Minds. The after-school band and chorus expand students musical talents and enjoyment. Teachers participating in the Kennedy Center Arts Program enhance their teaching strategies with arts integration lessons that combine both content and the arts. While students are learning about local history or the weather cycle, they explore learning through tableaux, shadow puppets, art printing, and movement.
We invite interested parents to join us at the annual District Conference to be held from 3:45 p.m. to 8 p.m. on February 5 at Golden Oak Community School. The District Conference is an opportunity for all stakeholders to learn more about education and the Sulphur Springs Union School District.
