Turmeric: the Spice for Life!
Natural remedies have been the go-to for health needs since the beginning of time. Scientists and researchers spend countless hours studying the effects of many herbs, spices, vegetables, fruits and other naturally occurring life in order to help make alternative medicines and remedies.
Turmeric is turning heads as an easy way to improve health across the board. A part of the ginger family, turmeric has a slightly bitter but warm taste. Its origins are in India and have traditionally been called “Indian saffron” for its deep history within the country. Although we think of it as a spice, the root was originally used as natural medicine in both India and China.
Turmeric, a root typically utilized as a dye or spice, has been found to help “prevent or treat a wide spectrum of cancers, inflammatory conditions, autoimmune problems and neurological ailments.” Research of the root began when medical researchers realized that India, where turmeric is a staple, has some of the lowest rates of cancer.
The medicinal qualities of turmeric are due to curcuminoids, and more specifically, curcumin. The compound is the main active ingredient that has anti-inflammatory effects and is also a great antioxidant. Curcumin only makes up a small part of turmeric, so many use an extract. A natural way to enhance the compound is to consume black pepper along with it, which enhances the effects from 3 percent to 2,000 percent.
There are many benefits to eating turmeric other than treating disease; adding the spice to your life could work wonders for your body, healthy or not. Turmeric has been proven to help cure acne, heal wounds, exfoliate and tighten skin, reduce cholesterol, control blood pressure and brighten your mood.
Whether you are having a bad day or are looking into alternative medicine, turmeric can work wonders for your body. Feeling skeptical? Whip up some curry and feel the positive effects.
