Big Changes Coming to High School Math, What Should I Know?

 As of 2019, students in the Hart District will need 30 credits of math to graduate from high school. That may seem far away, but it actually affects students who are currently freshmen in high school.  At first glance, this new requirement could be seen as a great idea to keep kids engaged in math throughout high school.
The Scary Part of Math Education and College Admissions, What Should I Know?
Many parents in this valley plan for their children to attend college.  It is important to avoid the trap of asking: “What math do I need to graduate?” The real question is: “What math do I need to obtain college admission?”  This is a very different question and can lead to a very surprising realization.
Example: If a freshman fails to pass Algebra 1A in the fall, they may be placed in an “Algebra Essentials/Prep course” to finish out the year.  During the sophomore year they would repeat it. This allows no more room for students to fall behind.  If the same thing happens to the student when they take Geometry, the end result will be that they will only complete two years of math in four school years.  The high school counts Algebra Essentials/Prep and Geometry Prep as math credits applied towards graduation; however, colleges do not count these classes for college admission.
Essentially, students can fall off the college track very early on in high school. Parents would be wise to make sure their child is supported throughout their high school math and science experience.  Students who are already off track can consider remediation in a private setting, utilizing WASC accredited supplemental schools like Math Support Services.
Common Core curriculum changes have intensified the level of material that is taught in our traditional math courses, further complicating the equation.  Make sure your child is prepared to take on these new challenges.  Communicate with your child’s school to make sure they understand your goals for your child.  A child aiming for a high school diploma needs different guidance than a child planning to apply to top level universities.
