CalArts Alumni Up for Awards
CalArts graduates are sweeping up nominations and wins this awards season, starting with the 73rd Golden Globe Awards, which aired on January 10. Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out, directed by CalArts alumnus Pete Docter took home the award for Best Motion Picture, Animated.
“Wow. You know, when I was in junior high, literally, my goal was to make it through the day with no one noticing me,” Docter said in his acceptance speech. “Obviously, something went horribly wrong tonight. But the point is we felt like growing up is really hard, and that’s a worthy subject to make a movie about.”
Docter was a film/video major at CalArts and completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1990. CalArts alumnus Peter Sohn, who graduated in 1999, also was nominated for the same category for directing The Good Dinosaur. Other nominees included Anomalisa, The Peanuts Movie and Shaun the Sheep Movie.
Fresh from its Golden Globes win, critically praised Inside Out received an Academy Awards nomination for Best Animated Feature alongside Anomalisa, When Marnie Was There, Boy and the World and Shaun the Sheep Movie.
Another Disney/Pixar entry, Sanjay’s Super Team, was directed and written by CalArts alumnus Sanjay Patel and is in the running for Best Animated Short Film. Patel will be up against Bear Story, Prologue, We Can’t Live without Cosmos and World of Tomorrow. The Academy Awards will be presented on February 28 during a live telecast on ABC.
