Success Starts Now
With midyear report cards in hand, now is the time to identify your child’s skill gaps before they turn into end of year regrets. As the school year progresses, so does the complexity of the classroom curriculum. It becomes more difficult for students with academic deficiencies to adjust to the increased difficulty of school work, which can leave them feeling overwhelmed.
“At Tutoring Club, speed is of the essence,” said Chad Schwartz, founder of Tutoring Club. “The earlier we identify a child’s skill gaps, the sooner we can start to bridge those gaps.” In order to remedy potential academic shortcomings, parents should evaluate midyear report cards and communicate with their children to identify the areas that require improvement.
Talk to Your Child
According to the US Department of Education, effectively communicating with your children is key to their success. Not only does healthy communication boost language skills, it also gives parents insight into their children’s world and builds trust.
Talk openly with your children about their classroom experiences and ask them to identify their strengths as well as their weaknesses. Actively listen to their academic challenges and maintain a positive attitude, focusing on finding a solution rather than just dwelling on the problem.
Be Encouraging and Understanding
Students thrive on encouragement and praise. When children feel that they are falling short, they can lose confidence and become overwhelmed. It’s important to bring attention to areas where your child is struggling, but celebrating small successes makes a difference.
Like adults, children are not perfect. Letting them know that it’s okay to feel frustrated eases the pressure of learning. Be empathetic and understand your child’s concerns. Focus on academic improvement rather than just achievement, and celebrate every success.
Plan for Success Together
Once you’ve established the areas that need improvement, talk with your child about the steps that should be taken to find a solution. Work on a plan of action and set small, achievable goals. Plans for success can include reading one hour before bed, setting aside the right time to study, or seeking outside instruction with a tutor.
Tutoring Club knows that every child has the potential to succeed. Every child is unique; and some students may need extra help to achieve the level of academic success they desire. Tutoring Club’s individualized instruction in math, reading, and writing focuses on skill gaps and targets the root problem rather than just treating the symptom.
