Why Christian Schooling is Essential for Christian Families
Schools are social institutions in which students learn about the world and their roles they are in. Christian schools are uniquely positioned to join with Christian parents in preparing and challenging young people to be Christ’s ambassadors within a culture fixated on self-centered consumerism, bewildered cynicism and heart-wrenching despair.
Your child’s school is where they will absorb many of their values and views of life and it is one of a parent’s greatest responsibilities to choose wisely the religious environment of the school in which they wish to immerse their children.
While a public school might claim a neutral, tolerant worldview, the claim does not hold up, scripturally speaking. A worldview is either Christian or non-Christian. It is naïve to believe that if Christianity is removed from a school that it leaves …”nothing”? If God is not the reference point for truth and learning, then something else must assume that role. That something is most definitely a religion – the religion of Secular Humanism, where man is placed above God. If you think that it is not a religion, the US Supreme Court begs to differ. The 1961 case of Torcaso v. Watkins (367 U.S. 488, 1961) stated that, “Among religions in this country which do not teach what would generally be considered a belief in the existence of God are … Secular Humanism.”
The goals of a Christian education are not shared by the secular world. The Christian ethic is simply incompatible with Secular Humanism which underlies modern education. When parents enroll their children in Christian school, they are demonstrating their commitment to have their children learn about all subjects in such a fashion as to see God at work in His world, and in a way that will ideally lead youngsters to respond in obedient service to God. Christians need not be apologetic about Christian schools. By sending their students to Christian schools, parents are bringing up their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord as instructed in Ephesians 6:4.
A great Christian school teaches students a pattern for life built on the Word of God. A Christian worldview is reflected in every activity of the school and it gives students a safe, stimulating and nurturing atmosphere to discover their glorious potential as part of God’s creation.
